Endoscopy in South Delhi
An upper GI endoscopy passes a thin flexible camera through the mouth to examine the food-pipe, stomach and first part of the intestine. It takes 5–10 minutes, is done under light sedation, and lets Dr Paliwal take biopsies, treat bleeding, dilate narrowings and detect early cancers that scans miss.

When it is needed
Persistent acidity or dyspepsia after 45 or with alarm features, difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood or black stool, unexplained anaemia or weight loss, suspected celiac disease or H. pylori, surveillance of Barrett's oesophagus or previous ulcers, and follow-up of gastric ulcers to confirm healing.
How it is done
You fast for 6 hours. A local throat spray and, in most cases, light intravenous sedation are given. The endoscope is passed gently; you can breathe normally throughout. High-definition scopes with narrow-band imaging (NBI) highlight abnormal tissue. Biopsies are painless. You rest 30–60 minutes and go home the same day with a companion.

What can be treated during endoscopy
Bleeding ulcers (clips, injection, coagulation), oesophageal varices (banding), strictures (dilatation), food bolus removal, foreign bodies, early cancers and large polyps (EMR/ESD), feeding tube placement (PEG) and intragastric balloon insertion.
Safety and after-care
Endoscopy is very safe; sore throat and bloating settle within hours. Do not drive the same day after sedation. Report severe pain, fever or bleeding — these are rare.

Questions about upper gi endoscopy
Is endoscopy painful?
Not with sedation. Most patients sleep through it and remember nothing; without sedation, a throat spray makes it tolerable with mild gagging.
What does an endoscopy cost in South Delhi?
Costs depend on sedation, biopsies and any treatment performed. PSRI Hospital provides a package estimate; insurance often covers diagnostic endoscopy when medically indicated.
How long does an endoscopy take?
The procedure takes 5–10 minutes; plan 2 hours at the hospital including recovery.
Can endoscopy detect cancer?
Yes — and with magnification and NBI, Dr Paliwal can detect cancers at a stage when they are curable endoscopically.
