Can your diet cause a stomach ulcer? Separating myths from H. pylori

By Dr Maneesh Paliwal ·

Spicy food, stress, milk — the folklore around ulcers is mostly wrong. The real causes are a bacterium and painkillers, and both are curable.

The real causes

Over 90% of duodenal ulcers and most gastric ulcers are caused by Helicobacter pylori infection or NSAID painkillers. Spicy food and stress can worsen symptoms but do not create ulcers.

Milk makes it worse

Milk soothes for minutes, then stimulates more acid. It is not an ulcer treatment.

Test, treat, confirm

A urea breath test detects active H. pylori; a 14-day regimen eradicates it; a repeat breath test confirms cure. Skipping the last step is why 'ulcers keep coming back'.

Painkillers

Ibuprofen, diclofenac and aspirin damage the lining directly. If you need them long term, protective therapy is essential.

When to worry

Black stool, vomiting blood, severe sudden pain or weight loss need urgent endoscopy — bleeding ulcers are treated through the scope at PSRI 24×7.
